My vacations

The year is 2011, a difficult year in politics, economy and society, which requires us to make some sacrifices beyond those already imposed. Going on vacation is becoming a luxury, especially when traveling abroad. I've been making some savings in last years to be able to go to one of the many destinations I wish to visit, and, even though the period is of contention, there I was with my daughter and some friends and relatives. It is not the first time that I hear the following words "Go to Cuba while Fidel is alive, because after everything will change..." and maybe weighed in our decision and we chose Cuba.

Cuba is considered the pearl of the Antilles. The capital is Havana, was born in 1519, a time when European navigators traveled the seas of all Central America.

It is a large city, which owns an overwhelming colonial charm, inhabited by three million happy, expressive people, that seem to live in permanent party atmosphere because the city has characteristics that translate into a permanent invitation to enjoy life thanks to the enviable weather (23ºC average annual temperature) and a huge blue and bright sky. Undoubtedly, Havana is one of the most beautiful Latin American capitals with characteristic of the colonial period and has many valuable historic buildings and monuments built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Plaza de Armas is the oldest and most majestic scenery of the city. The main commercial route of the city is Calle Obispo. One of the symbols of the city is Giraldilla, a bronze statue of two meters height holding the cross of Caravaca in the hands, located in La Fuerza fortress.

When you visit the Plaza Vieja, is essential to go to the Jaruco Count house, currently Cuban Heritage Cultural Fund, with numerous art galleries, and the house of the sisters Cardenas, now the center of the city's philharmonic society.

Between the second half of the seventeenth century and early nineteenth century, new places appear, like the first sidewalk of Havana, known as "Alameda de Paula." Other points are the Plaza de la Cathedral, considered the best preserved architectural landscape of Latin America and the Plaza de la Revolución. In the center of Havana can admire the beauty of the Paseo del Prado, Capitolio, where is the "0 km" (kilometer zero), from where all distances are calculated on the island.

During the decades of 30 and 40 of the twentieth century, Havana became the only urban metropolis of the country and throughout the Caribbean, which as reflected in high and rapid urban growth and population. Comes to power in 1952 General Fulgencio Baptista starting a period of strong political dictatorship. To combat the dictatorship came a revolutionary movement led by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, who still runs the country.

Havana seems to have stopped in time, and today we can see the famous Cadillac from the fifties and enjoy a cigar handmade in the street of Havana, where the smell is felt in the streets expressing the identity of the city and its inhabitants.

You can not leave Havana without stopping for a moment to taste the best mojito in the world in "La Bodeguita del Medio" which is a typical restaurant and a strong touristic spot of the city. Passed through here many writers, politicians, artists, actors, etc.. And they all leave their mark on the site through photos, objects or graffiti on the walls (most used), you can find names like Errol Flynn or Salvador Allende among others.

Fernando Ortiz describes the history of Cuba as being heavily dominated by tobacco smoke, the sweetness of cane sugar and full of sensuality in their music. A mixture of products featuring one of the most hospitable and sociable people of the Caribbean, with a blend of the presence of Spanish conquistadors and African sweat of black slaves.

Havana has everything to fill the eyes of those who visit, its history, rhythm and color, but above all by its architecture, it's a delight to stroll through its streets with beautiful facades and painting with custom colors and diverse themes.

 

To get to know the city well, the ideal is to walk, especially in the area of ​​Habana Vieja (if you have a sketch diary, you'll love). Want to go to the surroundings of the city? There are buses or you can always opt for the taxi.

Havana is a city with great nightlife, which lives to the rhythm of Latin music, so take the chance and learn to dance the mambo, bolero, salsa and chachacha in one of the many bars.

But now let's talk about where I spent most part of my vacation: VARADERO. Here you can see some of the most beautiful beaches of Cuba and the largest complex of resorts in the Caribbean. Is 140 km east of Havana, 34 km east of Matanzas and from Cardenas 16 km. It is the most famous beaches in Cuba, is situated on the northern coast of the peninsula Hicacos in the province of Matanzas. It is a sheltered peninsula which gives excellent condition, considered by many as one of the best beaches in the Caribbean with a variety of hotels. The route from Havana to Varadero, which necessarily passes through the city of Matanzas (the provincial capital of the same name), is pleasant and takes about 2h30 when done by car.

The domestic tourists began coming to Varadero in 1872, but the international development began in 1930 when American millionaire Irenee Dupont Nemours built a large estate on the peninsula. Even Mafia boss Al Capone spent his vacations in Varadero.

I stayed at the Tryp Peninsula which is a beachfront resort, with the main building entrance with restaurants, bar, lobby and services. As usual in this type of resorts, extends to the beach, surrounded by well treated and beautiful gardens where you can find the bungalows with rooms, swimming pools, spa and restaurants. It is calm and the beach is paradise, look good.

Children's pool - huge, with many shades and activities. Around the pool also has a baby pool, playground, kids club and snack bar for kids. 

The rooms - spacious and comfortable, with full bathroom, balcony and free safe. It has AC, TV, radio, CD player, telephone.

Pool of adults - has a bar and snack on hand, plenty of sun beds available and some shade. 


Activities and Entertainment - it has a little bit of everything both on the beach and on the resort, but nothing special and I venture to say bad. Only the lobby bar is great, always good voices and lots of salsa. It is very good for children because there is always fun entertainment for little ones.

Restaurants and Food - It is the reasonable but very repetitive. There are two buffet restaurants, 2 snacks and 4 themed. The theme did not bother to know, but according to some, are nothing special, so the buffet is the best option. The food is good and varied, but in both respects with small defects. But the meals not cease to be a "torture" because we had to head in the opening hours, or the queues were lengthy (more than 20 minutes) to get a little meat or fish and with children is not easy. And of course, take a little tip to the man of the grill.

Cleaning and Hygiene - Everything went well in both restaurant and room, but with small defects. On the first day, I tipped the "maid" with the a request for leave me one more water and beer. To take especial attention to bath towels and cleaning of the room because I was with my daughter, never failed. But not with the other people who have spent this vacations with us: they were always short on towels and the cleaning was not the best.

To be all good, you have to tip every day in different places, which is not fair to those who have already paid and was not little. The staff is very friendly, because friendliness works according to the tip: smile always appears after!

Maybe it's not a vacation to repeat! It was not bad, but from all the places I've been in the Caribbean...

But not everything is less good, and go to Cuba and not dive in these waters with a fabulous transparency "is like going to the Vatican and not seeing the Pope."

The geographical features of Varadero invites lovers of diving to visit these paradise water. The peninsula is close to one of the largest chains of coral with 7,000 km2, makes its flora and fauna that live on the sea, wrecks and underwater caves, the main attraction. Thus, diving in Varadero and witness landscapes of sea sand areas where several match zones of coral reefs, home to beautiful fish to be seen by divers, as lionfish (fabulous), grouper, huge shells among others. The water is completely transparent and warm. I have no doubt that it was the best waters in which dived. Lovers of photography would be surrendered to such beauty. It's very interesting the diving area known as "Cayo Piedra Underwater Park del Norte", which are distributed sunken warships that are very well preserved, and are poorly sighted just put your head under water (this is the transparency). Varadero has a diving area with more than 10 km long that includes 32 diving areas located between the keys and Matanzas Bay West Sabana-Camagüey archipelago.

I think that there are three Diving Centers in Varadero  (Aqua Diving Center, Marina and Chapelin Aquaworld Barracuda Scuba Cuba), and all have a long experience with divers.

What can I conclude from my visit to Cuba is that it is worth spending a few days in Havana, yes, and feel the city, diving in one of the best waters in the world (I'm not exaggerating, it is fabulous). Regarding resorts, maybe look for an alternative ...

As minhas férias

Estamos no ano de 2011, um ano difícil na política, na economia e socialmente, o que nos obriga a fazer alguns sacrifícios para além dos que já nos são impostos. Ir de férias começa a ser um luxo, quanto mais quando se viaja para o estrangeiro. Andei nos últimos anos a fazer algumas economias para poder ir a um dos muitos destinos que gostaria de visitar e, mesmo sabendo que o período é de contenção, lá fui eu, mais a minha filha e alguns familiares e amigos. Não é a primeira vez que oiço a seguinte expressão “Ir a Cuba é enquanto o Fidel for vivo, porque depois tudo muda…” e talvez tenha pesado na nossa decisão e escolhemos Cuba.

Cuba é considerada a pérola das Antilhas. A capital é Havana, nasceu em 1519, numa altura em que os navegadores europeus percorriam os mares de toda a América Central

É uma cidade ampla, detentora de um irresistível charme colonial, habitada por 3 milhões de pessoas alegres, expressivas, que parecem viver em permanente clima de festa porque a cidade possui características que se traduzem num convite permanente para se gozar a vida graças a um clima invejável (23ºC de temperatura média anual) e a um enorme céu azul e luminoso. Sem dúvida, Havana é uma das mais belas capitais latino-americanas com característica do período colonial e possui inúmeras construções históricas valiosas e monumentos construídos nos séculos XVI e XVII. 

Plaza de Armas é o mais antigo e majestoso cenário da cidade. A principal via comercial da cidade é a rua Obispo. Um dos símbolos da cidade é a Giraldilla, uma estátua de bronze de 2 metros que segura nas suas mãos a cruz de Caravaca, localizada na fortaleza La Fuerza. 

Quando visitar a Plaza Vieja, é imprescindível conhecer a casa Jaruco Count, actualmente Fundo Cubano de Herança Cultural, com inúmeras galerias de arte, e a casa das irmãs Cárdenas, actual centro da sociedade filarmónica da cidade.

Entre a segunda metade do século XVII e o início do século XIX, apareceram novos lugares, como o primeiro passeio de Havana, conhecida como "Alameda de Paula". Outros pontos são a Plaza de la Catedral, considerada o cenário arquitectónico melhor conservado da América Latina, e a Plaza de la Revolución. No centro de Havana pode-se admirar a beleza do Paseo del Prado e o Capitolio, onde fica o “km 0” (quilómetro zero), de onde são calculadas todas as distâncias da ilha.

Durante as décadas de 30 e 40 do século XX, Havana torna-se a única metrópole urbana do país e de todo o Caribe o que se reflectiu no elevado e acelerado crescimento urbanístico e populacional. Em 1952 chega ao poder o general Fulgêncio Baptista iniciando um período de forte ditadura política. Para combater a ditadura surgiu um movimento revolucionário liderado por Che Guevara e Fidel Castro, que ainda hoje governa o país.

Havana parece que parou no tempo, e hoje podemos observar exemplares dos famosos Cadillac dos anos 50 e saborear um charuto feito à mão na praça de Havana, onde o cheiro é sentido nas ruas expressando a identidade da cidade e dos seus habitantes.

Não se pode deixar Havana sem parar por um momento para sentir o sabor do melhor mojito do mundo na “La Bodeguita del Medio” que é um restaurante típico e um dos pontos turísticos fortes da cidade, por onde passaram para além de mim muitos escritores, políticos, artistas, actores, etc. E todos eles deixam a sua marca no local através de fotos, objectos ou grafites nas paredes (o mais utilizado); podes encontrar nomes como o de Errol Flynn ou Salvador Allende entre outros.


Fernando Ortiz descreve a História de Cuba como estando fortemente marcada pelo fumo do tabaco, pela doçura da cana-de-açúcar e repleta de sensualidade na sua música. Uma mescla de produtos que caracterizam um dos povos mais hospitaleiros e sociáveis dos Caraíbas, com uma simbiose da presença dos conquistadores espanhóis e do suor africano dos escravos negros.

Havana tem tudo para encher os olhos de quem a visita, pela sua história, ritmo e cor, mas acima de tudo pela sua arquitectura, que nos delicia ao passear pelas suas ruas com fachadas deslumbrantes e pinturas personalizadas com cores e temas diversificados.

 

Para ficares a conhecer bem a cidade, o ideal é passear a pé, especialmente na zona de Habana Vieja (se tiveres um diário gráfico, vais adorar). Queres ir até aos arredores da cidade? Existem autocarros ou então podes sempre optar pelo táxi.


Havana é uma cidade com muita vida nocturna, que se vive ao ritmo da música latina, por isso arrisca e aprende a dançar o mambo, o bolero, a salsa e o chachachá num dos muitos bares da cidade.


Mas agora falemos do local onde passei a maior parte destas minhas férias: VARADERO. Encontras aqui algumas das mais belas praias de Cuba e o maior complexo de resorts no Caribe. Está a 140 km a leste de Havana, 34 km a leste de Matanzas e a 16 km de Cárdenas. É o mais famoso local de praias de Cuba, está situado no litoral Norte na península de Hicacos na província de Matanzas. É uma península abrigada o que lhe confere excelentes condições, considerada por muitos como uma das melhores praias do Caribe com uma multiplicidade de hotéis. O trajecto de Havana a Varadero, que necessariamente atravessa a cidade de Matanzas (capital da província de mesmo nome), é agradável e tem duração aproximada de 2h30 quando feito de carro.

Os turistas nacionais começaram a vir para Varadero em 1872, mas o desenvolvimento internacional começou em 1930, quando o milionário Americano Dupont Nemours Irénée construiu uma grande propriedade na península. Até o chefe da máfia Al Capone vinha de férias para Varadero.


Fiquei no Tryp Peninsula que é um resort em frente à praia, com o edifício principal à entrada com restaurantes, bar, lobby e serviços. Como é normal neste tipo de resorts, estende-se até à praia, rodeado de jardins bem tratados e bonitos onde se encontram os bungalows com os quartos, as piscinas, SPA e restaurantes. É calmo e a praia é paradisíaca, com bom aspecto.

Tem piscina para crianças – enorme, com muitas sombras e actividades. À volta da piscina tem ainda piscina de bebés, parque infantil, kids club e snack-bar para crianças.

Os quartos – espaçosos e confortáveis q.b., com casa de banho completa, varanda e cofre grátis. Tem A/C, TV, rádio, CD, telefone.

Piscina dos adultos – tem bar e snack à disposição, muitas espreguiçadeiras disponíveis e alguma sombra.


Actividades e Animação – há um pouco de tudo tanto na praia como no resort, mas nada de especial e arrisco-me a dizer péssimos. Apenas o lobby bar é excelente: sempre boas vozes e muita salsa. É muito bom para as crianças, pois tem sempre uma animação divertida para os mais pequenos.

Restaurantes e Comida – Fica pelo razoável mas muito repetitivo. Existem 2 restaurantes buffet, 2 snacks e 4 temáticos. Os temáticos não me dei ao trabalho de conhecer, mas, segundo algumas opiniões, não são nada de especial, pelo que o buffet será a melhor opção. A comida é boa e variada, mas em ambos os aspectos com pequenos defeitos. Mas as refeições não deixam de ser uma “tortura” pois tínhamos de ir logo na hora da abertura, senão eram filas bastante demoradas (mais de 20 minutos) para se conseguir um pouco de carne ou peixe e com crianças não é fácil. E, claro, convinha levar uma notinha para o homem da grelha….

Higiene e Limpeza – Correu tudo bem tanto no quarto, mas, como nos restaurantes, também aqui com pequenos defeitos. No primeiro dia, dei gorjeta à “camareira” com o pedido de me deixar mais uma água e uma cerveja. Atenção às toalhas de banho e limpeza do quarto, pois estava com a minha filha, nunca falhou estando sempre à altura. O mesmo não aconteceu com as restantes pessoas que passaram estas férias comigo: havia sempre falta de toalhas de banho e a limpeza não era a melhor.

Para correr tudo bem, é dar gorjeta todos os dias nos diferentes sítios, o que não é justo para quem já pagou e não foi pouco. O pessoal não é muito simpático, pois a simpatia funciona em função da gorjeta: o sorriso aparece depois da nota!

Talvez não seja umas férias a repetir! Não correram mal, mas de todos os sítios onde estive nas Caraíbas…

Mas nem tudo é menos bom, e ir a Cuba e não mergulhar nestas águas com uma transparência fabulosa “é como ir ao Vaticano e não ver o Papa”.

As características geográficas de Varadero convida os amantes de mergulho a visitar este paraíso aquático. A península está perto de uma das cadeias mais importantes de corais com 7.000 km2, faz de sua flora e fauna que vivem do mar, navios afundados e cavernas submarinas, o principal atractivo. Desta forma, mergulhar em Varadero e presenciar paisagens de mar diversas onde zonas de areia combinam com zonas de recifes de coral, onde vivem belos peixes para serem vistos pelos mergulhadores, como peixes-leão (fabulosos), meros, búzios enormes entre outros. A água é completamente transparente e quente. Não tenho dúvida de que foram as melhores águas em que mergulhei. Os amantes de fotografia iriam ficar rendidos a tanta beleza. É muito interessante a zona de mergulho conhecida por “Parque Submarino Cayo Piedra del Norte”, onde estão distribuídos navios de guerra afundados que estão muito bem conservados, e são logo avistados mal pomos a cabeça dentro de água (tal é a transparência). Varadero tem uma zona de mergulho com mais de 10 km de extensão que contempla 32 zonas de mergulho localizadas entre Matanzas Bay e as chaves ocidental do arquipélago Sabana-Camagüey.

Julgo que há em Varadero três centros de mergulho (Aqua Diving Center, Marina Chapelin Aquaworld e Scuba Barracuda Cuba), e todos têm mergulhadores com uma longa experiência.

O que posso concluir da minha ida a Cuba é que vale a pena passar uns dias em Havana, isso sim, e sentir a cidade, mergulhar numa das melhores águas do planeta (não estou a exagerar, são mesmo fabulosas). Em relação aos Resorts, talvez procurar uma alternativa…
