Al HAJARAH - YEMEN

Uma incrível cidade "muralhada" foi construída no top de um afloramento rochoso maciço no meio das montanhas Haraz no oeste central de Iêmen, em uma região conhecida como San‘a’ Governorate.
As casas de vários andares em Al Hajarah evoluíram e foram reconstruídas ao longo dos séculos de forma lenta e cobrindo completamente a parte superior do afloramento. OU seja, por necessidade as ruas são estreitas e alguns edifícios parecem desequilibrarem-se à beira de penhascos íngremes. Dizem que os seus habitantes são amigáveis com uma paixão pela dança e música tradicional.

This incredible walled town has been built on the top a massive rocky outcrop within the Haraz Mountains of western central Yemen in a region known as the San‘a’ Governorate.
The multistory houses of Al Hajarah have evolved and been rebuilt over the centuries slowly and completely covering the upper section of the outcrop.   This has meant that by necessity the streets are narrow and some buildings seem to balance precariously on the edge of precipitous cliffs. Its inhabitants are said to be friendly with a passion for dancing and traditional music.

XUANKONG SI - CHINA

Há cinco Montanhas Sagradas na China e o Montanha Heng (Heng Shan), localizada na província de Shanxi é uma delas. A razão pela qual Xuankong Si foi construído tão acima do solo pode ser simplesmente por defesa contra saqueadores ou protecção contra as inundações. Numa versão mais romântica é que os monges dedicados ao silêncio num local tão alto poderiam mais facilmente atingir esse ideal. Dizem que eram proibidos de ouvir o latido do cão, o choro de uma criança ou mesmo o som de um galo cantar na saudação da madrugada. Hoje é atração turística, mas quem cuida deste local ainda aqui vive nestas cavernas.

There are five Most-Sacred mountains in China and Mt. Heng (Heng shan) located in Shanxi province is one of them.  The reason Xuankong Si was built so high above the ground may be one of practicality – defense against marauders or protection from floods. The more romantic version is that the Monks were dedicated to silence and so high above the ground they might achieve this ideal.  It is said that they were forbidden to hear the barking of dog, the wailing of a child or even the sound of a rooster crowing as it welcomed the dawn.
It is now largely a tourist attraction but caretakers are said to still live in its caves and halls.

CAPPADOCIA - TURKEY

Um lugar bizarro mas lindo situado na antiga região da Anatólia, na Turquia deve ser um dos exemplos mais antigos de ocupação humana contínua no mundo.
Enquanto acredita-se que a área da Capadócia e Göreme ter sido habitada por muitos milénios, foi durante o período romano que foi significativamente ampliada pelo novos colonos e o cristianismo se tornou a religião dominante da região para os próximos cem anos. Nota interessante é que na Alemanha este local é conhecido como o Vale do Amor  - Tal der Liebe. Actualmente tem uma população de 2,500 habitantes e é um dos locais históricos turísticos mais populares na Turquia.

This bizarre but beautiful place located in the ancient region of Anatolia in modern day Turkey may be one of the oldest examples of continuous human habitation in the world.
While it is believed that the area of Cappadocia and Göreme has been inhabited by people for many millennia it was during the Roman period that it was significantly expanded by new settlers and Christianity became the dominant religion of the region for the next several hundred years. An interesting side note is that in German it is known as Love Valley - Tal der Liebe.  It currently has a population of 2,500 people and is one of the most famous historic tourist destinations in Turkey.

ROUSSANOU MONASTERY

No centro-norte da Grécia encontra-se Metéora, que significa literalmente "rochas suspensas" ou "colunas do céu". Desde 1988 que o Mosteiro Roussanou tem sido o lar de um pequeno grupo de freiras. Antigamente o acesso aos mosteiros era feita por guindaste, hoje as estradas de acesso tiram grande parte do mistério que os rodeiam. Há rumores haver cavernas esculpidas na pedra sob o edifício, mas, por enquanto, não foram permitidas escavações. O mosteiro é constituído por três andares, que incluem a igreja, células, quartos de hóspedes, salas de recepção e uma sala de exposição.

In north-central Greece is Metéora, which literally means the rocks suspended in air.
Since 1988 Roussanou Monasteryhas been the home of a small group of nuns. Previously the access to the monasteries was done by crane, today the access roads take out much of the surrounding mystery. there are rumored to be sealed caves carved into the stone under the building but, as yet, no excavations have been permitted. The monastery consists of three levels which include the church, cells, guest quarters, reception halls and a display hall.

SETENIL DE LAS BODEGAS - ANDALUZIA- SPAIN

Os habitantes escavaram por fora das paredes do desfiladeiro e depois construíram as suas casas dentro. Em um só lugar existem casas que têm um milhão de toneladas de rocha em cima e por cima dos rochedos há ainda mais casas.

Its inhabitants have carved away the walls of the gorge and then built their houses into the recesses. In one place there are houses that have a million tons of rock above them and on top of that rock there are even more houses.

CASA DO PENEDO - PORTUGAL

Em plena Serra de Fafe, entre a cidade do mesmo nome e Cabeceiras de Basto, situada na região norte de Portugal. A Casa do Penedo começou a ser construída na Primavera de 1972, quando a família Rodrigues quis realizar o seu sonho. Dois anos depois a residência estava feita. Não se trata de uma instalação ou de um hotel temático, uma vez que é utilizada pela família como local de férias. Por fora é toda feita de pedra, salvo as janelas tortas e o telhado. Por dentro, a mobília, as escadas e os corrimões feitos de troncos completam o aspecto rústico. Os vidros são à prova de bala, a porta é de aço e o sofá pesa 350 quilos, pois é feito em betão e madeira de eucalipto. À primeira vista a casa nem parece real, muitos reclamam ser uma farsa criada em Photoshop. Mas é bem real!

Literally translated the name means House of Stone and it is located in the Fafe mountains of Northern Portugal. The House of Stone began construction in spring 1972, when the Rodrigues family wanted to fulfill his dream. Two years later the residence was made. This is not an installation or a themed hotel, since it is used by the family as a holiday destination. On the outside is all made of stone, except the windows and roof. Inside, the furniture, stairs and handrails are made of logs to complete the rustic look. The glass is bullet proof, the door is steel and the sofa weighs 350 kilos, as is done in concrete and eucalyptus wood.
At first glance the house does not seem real, there have been several claims that Casa Do Penedo is a hoax created by a Photoshop artist but it is definitely real!!

PONTE VECCHIO - ITALY

Situada na cidade de Florença em Itália esta ponte notável.
Embora a prática de pessoas viverem nos andares acima das lojas ter acabado, há rumores de que algumas destas lojas ainda têm pequenos apartamentos escondidos, fora dos olhares dos muitos turistas e habitantes que passam na Ponte Vecchio.

In the city of Firenze (Florence) Italy is a remarkable bridge.
Although it was once the practice for people to live above their shops this has largely ceased although it is rumoured that some of the Ponte Vecchio shops still have small apartments hidden out of site of the many tourists and inhabitants of Firenze, Italy.

MATMÂTA – TUNISIA

Aqui os habitantes escavaram profundamente no solo e, em seguida, escavaram túneis nas paredes laterais para criarem as suas casas. O mais provável é que os primeiros habitantes já sabiam que casas subterrâneas seriam menos afectados pelas temperaturas extremas típicas desta parte do mundo. A mais famosa destas habitações é o Sidi Driss Hotel destaque na imagem acima, onde ainda é possível passar uma noite por cerca de 20 dólares. (2010)

Here the inhabitants have dug deep pits into the ground and then tunneled into the side walls to create their homes. It is most likely that the early inhabitants already knew that underground homes were less affected by the extremes of temperature that can be experienced in this part of the world. The most famous of these dwellings is the Sidi Driss hotel featured in the image above, where it is still possible to spend a night for approximately 20 dollars. (2010)

SEALAND (PRINCIPALITY)

Este lugar muito estranho para se viver é frequentemente descrito como micro-nação devido ao facto de estar (foi), fora de águas territoriais de qualquer país. O Principado de Sealand é actualmente o lar de vários guardas, enquanto o seu governante, Sua Alteza, o Príncipe Michael (Bates) o Regente de Sealand, actualmente reside em Essex (2010). No passado, Sealand produziu os seus próprios passaportes e moeda. Foi mesmo representado em vários eventos desportivos internacionais.

This very strange place to live and is often described as a micro-nation due to that fact that it is (was) outside of the territorial waters of any country.  The Principality of Sealand is currently the home of several caretakers while its de facto ruler, His Highness, Prince Michael (Bates) Regent of Sealand, currently resides in Essex (2010).  Sealand has, in the past, produced its own passports and currency.  It has even been represented in various international sporting events. 

JOHN O GROATS

John O Groats é uma pequena cidade de apenas 300 habitantes, situada no ponto mais ao norte da Inglaterra. Durante o inverno, este lugar torna-se muito hostil, com fortes nevadas e denso nevoeiro. Os habitantes não veêm ninguém durante os meses de inverno e durante o verão, há imensos turistas a visitar a cidade e o farol.

John O Groats is a small town of only 300 residents, situated at the most northern point in England. During winter, this place becomes very unfriendly, with heavy snows and dense fog. The inhabitants don’t see any stranger around for the entire winter months, even though during summer, there are many tourists visiting the town and the lighthouse situated only 2.5 km further.

Estação Central de Antuérpia, Bélgica 

Quando esta estação palaciana estilo neo-barroco foi concluída em 1905, foi criticada pela sua extravagância (é decorada com mais de 20 tipos de mármore e pedra).

Estação Central de Maputo, Moçambique
Exteriores em verde-menta, uma grande cúpula, e em muito trabalho em ferro forjado. Supostamente projectada por Gustave Eiffel no início do século 20, a estação tem várias locomotivas a vapor de valor histórico.

Sirkeci Station, Istambul 
Construída em 1890 como o término da viagem Orient-Express de Paris, a fachada do edifício otomano de arte nova é particularmente atraente. Traços de tijolo vermelho na entrada e vitrais coloridos fornecem salpicos de luz para o interior.

Built in 1890 as the terminus for the Orient-Express journey from Paris, the façade of this Ottoman Art Nouveau building is particularly attractive. Swaths of red brick surround the wide entrance, and stained-glass windows provide colorful splashes of light inside. 

 

Southern Cross Station, Melbourne

O telhado ondulado, que se estende um quarteirão inteiro, tem sido comparado a um cobertor cheio de ar gigantesco flutuando sobre uma floresta de colunas em forma de Y. A forma aqui também é função: fumos preso nas cúpulas acima das plataformas escapa naturalmente através de furos na parte superior, tornando-se uma espécie de telhado respiração.

The undulating roof, which stretches an entire city block, has been compared to a gigantic air-filled blanket floating on a forest of Y-shaped columns. The form is also the function here: fumes trapped in the domes high above the platforms escape naturally through holes cut into the top, making it a sort of breathing roof.

 
Kanazawa Station, Kanazawa, Japão 
Beleza num design moderno e elegante. A entrada, Tsuzumi Gate,  em forma de tambor de mão em madeira e a Motenashi Dome de vidro em forma de guarda-chuva eram controversos porque contrastavam com a arquitectura tradicional desta cidade de castelo.

Beauty in its sleek modern design. The station’s wooden hand-drum-shaped Tsuzumi Gate and glass umbrella-shaped Motenashi Dome were controversial because they clashed with the traditional architecture of this old castle town.



 
Estação de Atocha, Madrid 
Com a abertura de um novo terminal em 1992, tiveram a ideia inspirada para converter a estação original adjacente num belo jardim tropical de palmeiras no centro que chegam  ao tecto de aço e vidro.

With the opening of a new terminal in 1992, locals had the inspired idea to convert the original adjacent station into a concourse with a beautiful tropical garden of palm trees reaching toward the steel and glass roof in the center.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai
A estação é um marco de Mumbai e um recurso vital para os três milhões de passageiros que a utilizam diariamente. As torres e ornamentação elaborada são semelhantes aos elementos de design encontrados em Moghul e palácios hindus em todo o subcontinente.

The station has endured as a Mumbai landmark - and a vital resource for the three million commuters who use it daily. The turrets and elaborate ornamentation are similar to design elements found on Moghul and Hindu palaces across the subcontinent.

 


Estação de São Bento, Porto, Portugal 
No exterior, século 19, com arquitectura parisiense com o seu telhado mansarda e fachada de pedra. No hall de entrada as paredes estão cobertas com um painel de 20.000 azulejos português, que levou o artista Jorge Colaço 11 anos para  a concluir.

The exterior is 19th-century Parisian architecture with its mansard roof and stone façade. In the front hall the walls are covered with 20,000 splendid azulejo tin-glazed ceramic tiles, which took 11 years for artist Jorge Colaço to complete.

 

Union Station, Washington, D.C.

Mais de 70 libras de ouro foi usado para folhear o tecto de gesso do salão principal durante um projecto de restauração extensiva no final de 1980 que consolidou a Estação como um tesouro natural. 

More than 70 pounds of gold leafing was used on the coffered plaster ceiling of the main hall during an extensive restoration project in the late 1980s that cemented the station as a natural treasure.

Uma das mais movimentadas estações da Europa e a que tem a mais perfeita imagem. Na fachada estão esculpidas 23 estátuas representando Amsterdão, Viena, e outros destinos servidos pela empresa Chemin de Fer du Nord.

O arquitecto AB Hubback procurou um estilo mourisco quando projectou este terminal no início de 1900.

The soundtrack is usually Mozart's classic sounds, and when your legs finally need some rest there are the horse-drawn carriages. In between, lovers get a sense of what it's like to live as a king and queen, visiting the regal splendor of the city's palaces and museums.

Capital da Andaluzia, Espanha, com encanto e atmosfera exótica. Em 2003 Filipe começou a viver das viagens. Em 2004 deu a volta ao Mundo em 14 meses e escreve crónicas de viagens para várias publicação. Tem o seu próprio site em Alma de Viajante. Casado com Luísa e com a filha Inês criaram um projecto a três: Diário da Pikitim - Volta ao Mundo em Família. Este novo projecto vai mostrar o mundo visto pelos olhos da Inês.
